LETTER OF CONDOLENCES FOR FILIPPINO VICTIMS

November 11, 2013

Dear friends,

We are attendants of an internship course on civil society held in the Philippines from September 23 to October 3, 2013. We are writing to express our deepest sympathy to the Filipino people, especially the bereaved families of the victims in the Haiyan typhoon.

These days in Vietnam, Haiyan generated intense media interest. At least 10,000 people were killed and the damage is yet estimated. Watching photos and videos of the devastation in Tacloban city, we could not hold back our feelings and tears. Even the most imaginative person cannot imagine the destruction caused by the super typhoon. The Philippines may be the most disaster-prone country, and it is our great luck that typhoons usually abate when they reach Vietnam after sweeping the Philippines! Because you have suffered for us successive tropical cyclones! You were such a heroic people when you overthrew the Marcos dictatorship to establish democracy, when you took the “giant” China to international tribunal. However, facing the anger of the gods, we know all of us must be submissive.

During our two weeks in the Philippines, we learnt a great deal about civil society, for which we are grateful to you, the peaceful Filipino people. The Vietnamese diaspora are also grateful to you, who have sheltered our people on their journey to shores of freedom.

We have friends working in charitable NGOs, and we know you are in urgent need of support from people all over the world. On November 10, the Vietnamese government provided an emergency aid of US$ 100,000 for the Philippines, but this is too little in compared to the damage you are suffering from.

We are calling on the Vietnamese people in every part of the world to help the Filipino overcome these pains and losses. There's a Vietnamese saying, “one piece of food while hungry equals a big basket of food while full.” We will do whatever we can to support you, including praying for you everyday.

Attendants of the training,
